Direct observation of current in type I ELM filaments on ASDEX Upgrade

چکیده
Magnetically confined plasmas are often subject to relaxation oscillations accompanied by large transport events. This is particularly the case for the high confinement regime of tokamaks where these events are termed edge localized modes (ELMs). Present ELM theories rely on a combined effect of edge current and the edge pressure gradients which result in intermediate mode number (n ∼= 10−15) structures (filaments) localized in the perpendicular plane and extended along the field lines. By detailed localized measurements of the magnetic field perturbation associated to type I ELM filaments it is shown that these filaments carry a substantial current. Parameters determining the radial propagation of type-I ELMs in ASDEX Upgrade
The radial propagation of type-I ELMs in ASDEX Upgrade has been measured using a number of techniques. The most reliable technique uses a filament probe to measure the time difference between two separated probes and yields a mean radial velocity obtained of ~1.5 kms -1 . The radial velocity calculated using a time of flight technique suffers from uncertainties in the start time and yields radi...
متن کاملICRF wave field measurements in the presence of scrape off layer turbulence on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak (invited).
A new array of B-dot probes was installed on ASDEX Upgrade. The purpose of the new diagnostic is to study Ion Cyclotron Range-off Frequencies (ICRF) wave field distributions in the evanescent scrape-off layer (SOL) plasma region on the low field side of ASDEX Upgrade. The vacuum measurements (no gas, BT = 0 T) reveal ICRF wave field measurements consistent with the profiles expected from the ne...
متن کاملELM phenomenon as an interaction between bootstrap-current driven peeling modes and pressure-driven ballooning modes
An ELMy ASDEX Upgrade plasma equilibrium is reconstructed taking into account the bootstrap current. The peeling mode stability of the equilibrium is numerically analysed using the GATO [1] code, and it is found that the bootstrap current can drive the plasma peeling mode unstable. A high-n ballooning mode stability analysis of the equilibria revealed that, while destabilizing the peeling modes...
متن کاملFirst observation of edge localized modes mitigation with resonant and nonresonant magnetic perturbations in ASDEX Upgrade.
First experiments with nonaxisymmetric magnetic perturbations, toroidal mode number n=2, produced by newly installed in-vessel saddle coils in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak show significant reduction of plasma energy loss and peak divertor power load associated with type-I edge localized modes (ELMs) in high-confinement mode plasmas. ELM mitigation is observed above an edge density threshold and is...
